Seven Hills Park

The Reality:

Walk to the corner of 16th & Howell on Capitol Hill and you'll find this: a cracked asphalt parking lot.

The Vision:

The park is pinned in place to the north by the community garden, picnic promenade, and the church and to the south by a shade promenade under an allee of trees. The promenade provides various types of seating facing the street and facing the park, barbecue grills, picnic tables, and a trellis. A grouping of boulders highlights Capitol Hill's role as one of the seven hills of Seattle. (Mithun's description of the project upon completion)

Through the Pro Parks Levy, Seattle Parks & Recreation purchased the .21-acre asphalt parking lot at 16th & Howell in 2007. Parks hired Mithun as the landscape architect in charge of design and construction. Incorporating feedback from community meetings held in 2008, Mithun created a design concept for the park that includes public art, barbecues, a communal garden, and more.

Friends of Seven HillsPark is a group of community members who came together in the summer of 2008 to support the park as designed by Mithun. When, after a series of community planning meetings, Mithun presented their finished design, we realized that in order to build the park we had helped to conceive, we needed to come together and support it through a community-based fundraising effort.

Park construction begins this November.
